Tags¶
Tags allow users to filter for your CYOA by a set of defined categories. In this section we will explore how to add tags to your project and tag definitions.
How To Edit Project Tags¶
Step 1: Project tags are located under project settings. From within the CYOA editor, click the settings cog in the top left-hand corner of the screen.
Step 2: In the left pane, scroll to the section titled "Tags" and apply all relevant tags to your project.
Danger
When distributing your CYOA, ensure you are only using tags which apply to your CYOA in its current form.

Content Rating Tags¶
Rating | Description |
---|---|
Safe | No obscene or vulgar depictions of the human body. e.g. no sex, nudity, provocative clothing, or ecchi scenes. |
Suggestive | Has minor to moderate amount of risqué and sensual elements. |
Erotica | Has a high amount of risqué and stimulating elements that contribute to the plot, including explicit nudity. |
Status Tags¶
Status | Description |

Ongoing | Active work in progress. |
Completed | Officially finished work. |
Hiatus | Paused work, expected to eventually be picked up again by the author. |
Canceled | Unfinished work, canceled by the author. |
Genre Tags¶
Genere | Description |
---|---|
Action | Combat is a major theme. |
Adventure | Characters go on an epic journey searching for someone, something, or just for the sake of exploration. |
Comedy | Main purpose to get a laugh and amuse the readers. |
Crime | Stories that center around investigating criminal activity, either focusing on the criminal or the law enforcement involved. |
Drama | Plot-driven stories portraying emotionally-driven characters in intense situations. |
Fantasy | Stories set in a magical, fantastical setting. Sword and sorcery! Dungeons, dragons and demons! |
Historical | Stories depicting an antiquated era of Earth; not necessarily part of real world history. |
Horror | Features major story/plot elements which are intended to frighten the characters and/or audience. |
Isekai | Stories about the protagonist being transported to a different world, through space and time. Do not apply this tag to anything where the other world exists in Virtual Reality. |
Mahou Shoujo | Stories about girls (not always) transforming and fighting evildoers. |
Mecha | Big metal fighting robots, normally depicted in humanoid form. |
Medical | Stories about doctors, nurses, apothecaries and other medical professions. |
Mystery | Stories where there is an unknown problem/puzzle, and a major part of the plot is trying to solve it. |
Philosophical | Stories which focus on exploring the human condition through characters’ development or exploration of such. |
Psychological | A narrative genre that emphasizes interior characterization and motivation to explore the spiritual, emotional, and mental lives of the characters. |
Romance | Centered around the main characters trying to gain the affection of the ones they love to get into a relationship. |
Sci-Fi | Fantasy-driven story based on science and technology as its main concept and approach to the plot. |
Slice of Life | Depiction of the everyday life of the characters which often lacks melodrama and conflicts in its main theme. |
Sports | Any type of sports that are prominently displayed are the central theme of the story. |
Superhero | Characters with superhuman powers who are identified by themselves or other characters as heroes. |
Thriller | Dark, edgy, suspenseful stories that heighten the readers’ feelings of anxiety and anticipation. |
Tragedy | Depicting human suffering with the accompaniment of catharsis on the grief and sorrow experienced by the characters. Do not apply this tag to anything containing bad events, the work itself should be focused on this subject. |
Villainess | Stories which portray haughty ladies, who unapologetically scheme and manipulate in their pursuit of defeating a heroine, only to face the consequences of their actions, and meet their own tragic end. This genre can also portray protagonists who, after being unjustly labelled as antagonists, strive to defy societal expectations and rewrite their own destinies. Often set in an otome game type setting. |
Wuxia | Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of martial artists. |
Yaoi | Also known as boys rabu or shounen ai. Focused on relationships between males. Either romantic or sexual. |
Yuri | Also known as girls rabu or shoujo ai. Focused on relationships between females. Either romantic or sexual. |
Theme Tags¶
Theme | Description |
---|---|
Aliens | A focus on characters who originate from other planets, not Earth. |
Animals | Centered around specimens of the animal kingdom; including but not limited to their traits, behavior, etc.. May or may not feature humans in the main cast. |
Culinary | Stories with an exceptional focus on cooking, food, drink, or enjoying/analyzing meals. |
Crossdressing | Characters wearing clothing associated with the opposite sex. |
Delinquents | Yare Yare Daze. Stories about ruffians getting into fights and forming friendship. Notably known for the pompadour hairstyle as well as not conforming to society's rules. |
Demons | Intelligent creatures from hell or dark mythology. |
Genderswap | Changing the character’s original sex to its opposite. Distinct from crossdressing. |
Ghosts | Stories featuring spirits of the dead. |
Gyaru | Japanese social subculture of girls that typically follows trendy western fashion and activities that are considered to be going against the traditional Japanese standard of beauty. |
Harem | Having at least three female main characters competing for the affection of the male protagonist. |
Mafia | Having gang life and/or violence. |
Magic | Mystical elements. Spells and sorcery. Through use of unseen forces, characters impose their will upon reality. |
Martial Arts | |
Military | Associated with the armed forces, normally with the country or private sector. |
Monster Girls | They are supernatural monsters, but also girls. |
Monsters | Does not look or act like a human. They are supernatural monsters. |
Music | Music is central to the plot or main characters. |
Ninja | Covert operatives who use ninjutsu or similar stealth tactics. |
Office Workers | Depicting people actively going in for work in the office and interacting with the environment at their workplace. |
Police | Police and various other law enforcement agencies doing their duties. Usually ties in with criminal works. |
Post-Apocalyptic | Main story takes place following an apocalyptic catastrophe. |
Reincarnation | The protagonists die in their original world and get reborn in a new world. |
Reverse Harem | Having at least two male main characters competing for the affection of the female protagonist. |
Samurai | Featuring either traditional Japanese samurai warriors or their way of life. |
School Life | Having school as a theme in the character’s storytelling. |
Supernatural | Urban legends, occult and other-worldly elements. |
Survival | Characters finding themselves in difficult situations that are grueling to sustain their own life in a non-comedic way. |
Time Travel | Travel through time. |
Traditional Games | Games which reflect the setting’s cultural background or folk culture. |
Vampires | Usually immortal beings, vampires: commonly suck blood, are harmed by sunlight, can turn into a bat, are afraid of crosses/garlic, etc... |
Video Games | Games played on electronic devices. |
Virtual Reality | Simulated reality generated from computers to immerse the user in a virtual world. |
Zombies | Reanimated dead bodies that want to eat the living. |
